Strategies to aid your marketing

With modern consumers more socially conscious and politically active than ever before, businesses are left with a choice of whether or not to respond. While many are choosing to remain silent out of fear of alienating part of their customer base, a Morning Consult study has shown there is a high demand for brands to speak up. Here are a few ways you can respectfully comment on current events and show that your brand genuinely cares.

Step beyond your company’s perspective. Internal expertise and perspective are important in marketing since your company likely knows its products better than anyone. However, tackling a topic like racial injustice may very well fall outside your business’ purview. Consult with outside experts to be sure your messaging is thoughtful and sincere.

Own up to past mistakes. Many companies have released ads showcasing their dedication to keeping their employees safe during the pandemic or asserting their stance against discrimination. However, it didn’t take long for people to dig into the history and current policies of these companies and see a glaring hypocrisy. If you find an issue with how your company is operating, apologize without caveats. Admit your lack of understanding and make plans to educate yourself and amend the situation.

Take action. Messaging alone is just lip service. Customers don’t just want to hear you take a stand, they want to see it in your actions. There are many ways you can do this, such as offering paid time off for employees to volunteer, revisiting your hiring policies, making an effort to recruit candidates from underrepresented communities, or even just starting an open dialogue with your team to educate them as well as yourself.
